Emerging Issues grant

This funding opportunity supports research to learn why some experience prolonged symptoms of COVID-19. Often referred to as Post-Acute Sequelae of Sars-CoV-2 (PASC) or “long COVID,” your research can help find the reasons why new or returning symptoms develop after the acute phase of infection ends.

PASC affects patients with asymptomatic, mild or severe COVID-19 symptoms. Because the imaging features, pathophysiology, clinical trajectory and predictors of PASC are still emerging, this funding opportunity seeks to elicit evidence-based research and literature in radiology that will allow us to gain a better understanding of PASC.

Research objectives and scope
The R&E Foundation is accepting grant proposals focused on all aspects of diagnostic and interventional imaging in PASC, including but not limited to:

• Identifying imaging markers for PASC
• Identifying baseline risk factors for PASC
• Predicting outcomes and clinical trajectory
• Artificial intelligence and radiomics applying to PASC
• Image guided interventions or health services research relating to PASC

Eligibility

• Applicants/principal investigators must be RSNA members (at any level) at the time of application and throughout the duration of the award.
• One or more of the co-investigators must be a dues-paying member.
• Applicants must hold a faculty or equivalent position in a department of radiology, radiation oncology or nuclear medicine with an educational institution.
• If an applicant is not currently a faculty member at the time of application but will become a faculty member when the award commences, a letter from the department chair attesting to this appointment must be provided.

Selection criteria
Applications will be reviewed using the following criteria:

• Innovation
• Impact
• Knowledge of and experience within the specific topic
• Well-defined and researched needs assessment that identifies current practice gaps of identified learners
• Feasibility
• Scalability/expandability
• Content monitoring, update strategy and sustainability

Select projects will be eligible for a one-year renewal. Milestone completion will be used to determine if subsequent funding is merited.

Budget
Applications with budgets up to $100,000 (maximum) for the project year will be considered. The R&E Foundation does not pay institutional, indirect or overhead costs.

This funding opportunity supports capacity-strengthening activities to improve radiologists’ ability to address emerging issues that threaten the health and well-being of disparate populations in an effective, timely manner.

Your research can help identify issues, evaluate and test solutions, disseminate information and develop programs to address various forms of health care disparities to provide equitable care and achieve better outcomes for all.

Research objectives and scope
The R&E Foundation is accepting grant proposals focused on novel, exploratory interventions to mitigate the negative impact of health care disparities in the fields of radiology and radiation oncology.

Potential research topics can include but are not limited to:

• Interventions to improve health care disparities related to stroke diagnosis and treatment
• Interventions to improve health care disparities related to cancer screening, diagnostic workup or cancer care
• Interventions to improve health care disparities related to cardiovascular or other vascular disease

Grant proposals should include background information about the current status of the specific health care disparities, the proposed interventions to mitigate the adverse effects and methods to measure the effectiveness of the intervention.

Proposals including a framework to address disparities and potential strategies to scale the intervention to a larger population are desired. Proposals using AI tools for identifying and addressing disparities are welcome.

Multi-disciplinary collaborations that include community partners is highly encouraged, such as engagement with safety net hospitals to address access to care and health literacy. The proposal can expand to include health care disparity education and outreach efforts.

• Expected impact of the intervention on the investigators’ institution/patient population(s) and on the general public
• Knowledge of and experience within the specific topic
• Investigators with affiliation or demonstrated collaborative efforts with community partners
• Well defined and researched needs-assessment that articulates current gaps
• Metric-based outcomes analyses that demonstrate achievement of objectives
• Scalability/expandability
• Content monitoring, update strategy and sustainability
• Timeline and milestones to completion (will be used to determine if subsequent funding is merited)
