Comparative Effectiveness Research Training

Overview

Co-sponsored by RSNA, the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation (SIRF) and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), this hands-on training program in comparative effectiveness research (CER) will introduce you to the methodology and tools for performing CER. The training is delivered over the course of a year in a combination of online modules, web-based sessions and a 1½-day, in-person workshop.

The goal of the CERT program is for each participant to develop a proposal for a grant application that could be submitted for the ASNR CER award, SIRF CER award, RSNA Scholar award, GERRAF program or other external funding.

Learning objectives

  • Implement the principles of CER design as they apply to imaging studies to measure patient outcomes.
  • Describe the large database available for population health and or predictive analytics.
  • Incorporate Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning technology to CER in imaging studies.
  • Comprehend the regulatory and implementation issues associated with imaging related CER.
  • Develop a grant proposal for imaging related CER.

Accreditation and Designation Statements

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation (SIRF), and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). The RSNA is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. 

This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™.

Applicant criteria

Applications will undergo a rigorous review and selection process. Successful applicants will:

  • Be a junior faculty or senior trainee in radiology, radiation oncology or nuclear medicine academic departments. Mid-to-senior career faculty, international radiologists and research investigators with an MD or PhD (or equivalent) may also be considered.
  • Not have been principal investigators on an externally funded CER project.
  • Have the support of the department chair at their institution, including release time to attend the 1½-day, in-person workshop and time to complete all assignments.
  • Have a viable research idea known to match current CER priorities.
  • Have a mentor, preferably from their home institution, who has been successful at conducting CER; is committed to helping the participant throughout the program and grant application process; and is willing to provide written input on selected portions of the proposal throughout the program.
  • Be an RSNA, ASNR, SIRF or SNMMI member at the time of the program.

Location

The 1½-day, in-person session is held at RSNA Headquarters, 820 Jorie Blvd. Suite 200, Oak Brook, Illinois. Over the course of the year, there will also be web-based lectures and web-based small group grant proposal review discussions.;

Application process

Applications are being accepted for the 2022-2023 workshop. Participants are responsible for costs associated with travel, hotel and ground transportation to the course location. There is no separate fee for this course.
